As I may have mentioned, I am always on the lookout for more Halloween music. This week, I actually found some new, (to me), stuff, and gave it a listen. Now, Midnight Syndicate is not a new group, but, for some reason, they’ve only just popped up in my searches. After sampling a couple of tracks on their Halloween Music Collection album, I decided to get the whole thing and really test it out.
There are 22 tracks on this CD and all of the tracks are very well done. They’re all very creepy, each in their own way. I’m glad I bought it. I’ll buy the others the group has made as well. That being said, the music doesn’t have the same feel as the other Halloween music I have on my playlist. To me, it screams of video game music, from something like Castlevania, with the exception of the track named, “Residents Past”. That track totally makes me think of Kingdom Hearts, specifically, the Castle Oblivion stages. I can totally imagine slaying vampires and werewolves and demonic marionettes while listening to it. It just doesn’t have the feel of something I would listen to as a stand alone. I keep waiting for someone to start singing. I have added it to my Halloween playlist. It’s a great supplement to what I had already. Of course, this is just my opinion. You might listen to it, love it, and leave it on repeat until there is a blank spot on your iPod.
I don’t dislike any of the tracks, but there are 22 of them. So, I can’t really talk about all of them. I’ll just tell you about a few of my favorites. I like the “Fallen Grandeur” track. It’s more upbeat, which I like, and it reminds me of Bach’s “Toccata & Fugue In D Minor”, which, I’m sure, the group used as inspiration. I also like “Born of the Night”. It has a vampiric feel to it and a sense of urgency, almost like whatever creature they were thinking of has to complete it’s task before the sun rises. While listening to the “Shadows” track, I found myself tapping along with the beat. It doesn’t feel like it matches its name, though. When I think of shadows, I don’t think of anything so upbeat.
I’ll also mention a couple that I’m not so fond of, such as the track, “Army of the Dead”. Just like its name implies, it sounds like an army of darkness marching off to ravage the land. It’s a bit too blocky and rigid for my tastes. “Vampyre” isn’t one of my favorite tracks either. It does feel like a vampire’s theme, but it feels more skulking than I would like. I feel like it should be more confrontational. Do vampires skulk more than anything else?
Whatever your tastes, if you’re the type who likes to have things extra creepy and scary, then this CD would be the perfect thing to have on while playing a nail biting game, like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or Until Dawn. You could also have it on while reading certain books or watching a scary movie. There’s nothing like upping the ante to give yourself a good heart attack or to keep you wide awake in the darkness of your bedroom.
