When I was a kid, and thoroughly enjoying Halloween, I had heard silly rumors like tainted/poisoned candy or apples with razor blades in them. To my knowledge, my parents never actually found any objectionable looking candy when they were “checking” my Halloween goodies. According to Snopes.com, it’s all just a bunch of pranks and hooey. That being said, (and, hopefully, put to rest), I thought I would create this post sooner rather than later, as people need time to create their treats.
In more recent years, the thought of creating my own, healthier treats has gained more momentum. Sure, some might argue that buying store candy is a lot easier. That is, most likely, true. However, this holiday comes only once a year, (for now), and, I think, it’s worth the effort. Ask yourselves, would you enjoy the holiday more if you created some delicious experiments for neighborhood visitors on Halloween than if you simply went to the store an grabbed a big, assorted bag of bite-size candy while picking up eggs, milk, and cheese? I think the answer is clear.
A cursory look at Pinterest, (my home away from home), will reveal pages of great treat ideas varying from little effort to “that’s the lady that gave out the awesome treats last year.” If you’re looking for something to make in a pinch, the Rice Crispies treats fit the criteria. After all, you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen: cereal, marshmallows left over from the 4th of July, and some chocolate. There’s the Chocolate CandyCorn Treats, the Frankenstein’s Monster Treats, or the Rice Crispy Brains. but you can make them into any shapes you want, using any ingredients you want. Oh, the beauty, (or horror).
I think my favorites would be the “Chex Mix” types. These treats have the most potential for being healthy whilst still being fun, I think. The Harvest Trail Mix is a nice concoction. The Peanut Butter Monster Munch also looks like a winner. Put a scoop or two of these into some clear cellophane, and you’re “treating.”
A couple of years ago, whilst out with family, I visited a house that handed out cups of scooped ice cream. Really, the sky is the limit when it comes to handing out treats. Although, the ice cream felt a little less than Halloween spirit. Pumpkin pie would have been more in keeping with the holiday, I think. Mmmm. Pie…. Scare on.
