You’re probably not surprised to know that Boooo-opoly is just like the original Monopoly, except for the spooky theme. I, kind of, expected as much, but I was hoping for a little more. The rules are the same, the dice are ordinary, and the money units are the same. The only things that have changed, and are superficial, are the game pieces and the board squares names.
I realize that the game is just a spooky version of Monopoly itself, but I think some things could have been done to separate it a bit more. For example, do monsters use actual money like us humans do? Wouldn’t there be some other form of purchasing unit that would appeal to creatures of the night? Gold-looking coins would have been better than paper money. I mean, I can’t picture Dracula flying over to the Realtor’s office and throwing a stack of 20s on the table to buy Baltic Ave.
I’m disappointed. As I said, the game needed more spooky stuff. Instead of the usual red, yellow, or blue little houses, the ones in this version are simply black, and the upgrade is a big yellow hand. I think it would have been better to have witches’ cottages and vampire or Frankenstein style castles as upgrades. Plus, I think the dice should have been altered, too. Black dice with some spooky symbols on them would be better.
I give this game 2 pumpkins out of 10. There isn’t much by way of spookiness, and the game is still Monopoly in disguise. However, if I, suddenly, felt inclined to play a game of Monopoly, obviously, I would play this one. A barely spooky Monopoly is still better than a Monopoly that isn’t spooky at all.
