I may have mentioned, in one or two or my other posts, that I like to go to stores like Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels to look at the Fall and Halloween decorations. Well, I was at Michaels a couple of days ago,… salivating. While I was there, I found this little, wooden holder that I thought would be perfect for Fall…, with the right accoutrements. Somewhere else in the store, I found some little, felt pumpkins that would go great with it, and I matched them with some hay from one of those plastic wrapped bales.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Art Minds Wood Picked Fence Crate, (Amazon has one, too).
- Felt Pumpkins, about 2” tall, (mine came on a garland).
- Small bale of hay, (or access to a couple of handfuls).
- Crazy Glue
- Double Sided Tape
Now, you may have noticed that the Picked Fence Crate doesn’t come stained or painted. I kept mine the way it was. I think it looks fine, but you’re welcome to paint or stain it as you see fit. These few steps can really be done in any order. It doesn’t matter. I started by gluing the felt pumpkins to the front. If you can’t find felt, those peel and stick pumpkins might do the job. If not, cut some out of regular squares of felt.
Next, I would grab the hay and start pulling out some longer strands. You’re going to glue them to the inside of the crate. Try not to get any glue on your fingers, (yeah, right). You might, also, want to pluck out your strands over a cloth or some other surface so that you can easily collect the small pieces that, inevitably, fall out. Save those, if they’re not too small. Once you have a good amount of long-stranded bits of hay, begin gluing them to the inside horizontal bar. Arrange them however you would like. There really is no wrong way.
I saved this step for last because you probably have quite a mess of smaller strands at this point. Now is the time to use the double-sided tape. Put a layer on the bottom of the crate, then sprinkle all of those small bits over the the tape. When you think there is enough there, press it all down. I, also, squirted a little bit of crazy glue over the top to help the hay stay in place. Once that step is done, shake the crate, gently, over the trash. Voila! You’re done!
I used the crate as a soap dispenser, as you can see in the pictures, but if you have something else that works as well as, or better, than go for it. I’d love to see what you came up with. Enjoy your new addition to your Fall décor.
